During harvest, the load changes continuously. A grain tank fills up, a silage trailer leaves the field fully loaded, and machinery regularly switches between field and road use.

This places high demands on agricultural tyres. A tyre pressure that is suitable for an empty machine may be too low at full load. Conversely, a high pressure for road transport can reduce soil contact in the field and increase slip.

Match tyre pressure to the heaviest load

For the tyre, the key factor is how much weight is actually carried by each axle and wheel.

Therefore, set tyre pressure according to the heaviest normal load. If you base it only on the empty machine, the tyres may become overloaded during harvesting.

The correct pressure depends on the load per tyre, the exact tyre specification, driving speed and whether the machine is used in the field or on the road. Always use the manufacturer’s load and tyre-pressure table.

If pressure is too low for the load, the sidewall and casing deform excessively. This generates extra heat and increases the risk of tyre damage. Excessive pressure in the field, on the other hand, reduces the contact area. Fewer lugs can then build traction, which may increase slip.

Field and road use require different tyre pressures

In the field, an appropriately low pressure benefits the contact area and traction. On the road, speeds are higher and a higher pressure may be necessary to prevent excessive deformation and heat build-up.

If you frequently switch between field and road use, a tyre-pressure control system can be a solution. Heuver offers the Float Control tyre-pressure control system, which allows you to adjust tyre pressure from the cab to suit the application.

More slip? Look at the entire combination

Some slip is necessary to transfer tractive force. It becomes a problem when the tyres clearly spin while the machine barely moves forward any faster.

First, look at what has changed during the work. Has the machine become heavier? Has the soil become softer? Does the implement require more tractive force? Worn lugs, unfavourable weight distribution and deep ruts can also increase slip.

Increasing power is usually not the solution. The tyres will spin more, while the additional power is not effectively transferred to the ground.

If slip increases, check the working depth and driving speed, weight and ballast distribution, tread and tyre pressure at the current load. Also consider whether deep ruts and soft areas can be avoided.

Do not automatically lower tyre pressure. A larger contact area can improve traction, but only if the tyre is permitted to carry the current load at that lower pressure.

Do not forget the tyres under the harvest trailer

When a tractor slips, the cause is not always the tractor tyres. A heavily loaded silage trailer or tipper that creates deep ruts causes more rolling resistance. The tractor must therefore deliver more tractive force and reaches the limit of available traction sooner.

Therefore, also check the load capacity and tyre pressure of the towed agricultural equipment.

Implement tyres and flotation tyres can help distribute the load over a larger contact area. Many brands now also offer these tyres in VF versions. However, simply fitting a wider tyre is not enough: the size, rim and load capacity must also match the machine and its application.
